I really appreciate this. I recognize I have done this in the past, and I see it with other white folks. We tend to overly try to “be nice” in order to gain some sort of validation that we are a “nice, non-racist white person.” But really, we’re just avoiding discomfort of acknowledgment of the deeper issues; and in reality, our “niceness” probably comes across fake and superficial. And unfortunately, it kind of is because we haven’t been willing to really confront, admit, acknowledge and discuss the real issues at hand. I love having my eyes more opened, so thank you!
